There is a strange and melancholy beauty to the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. On the one hand we experience the day with the least amount of light, and that is always a bit disconcerting, but on the other hand we are about to see the amount of daylight slowly increase now, until we reach the glorious warmth of the summer solstice on June 21.

Twilight is a beautiful thing on this day, for the sadness of such little light, and the hope and reality of the renewal of light beginning the next day.
