Peace, Love and Beauty

29 Sunday Sep 2013

With so much violence and ugliness in the world, it is always good to remember what good there is too. Peace and love are things we all need, as well as beauty. The first two are more difficult to define, even depict in art, the later is easy. Peace and love are more spiritual in nature; beauty of course is usually more physical; the best, and rarest thing is a combination of all three.

Short of that, here is a nice vision of one of my favorite types of beauty. The way the folds of her wet garment are draped across her body is particularly lovely. To me, this is art, a beautiful depiction of a beautiful woman.

The Parthenon Sculptures, Or Elgin Marbles

The Parthenon was a great Greek temple built in Athens to the goddess Athena. Finished in 438 BC, it stood for nearly 2000 years as one of the few well preserved pagan temples of the ancient world. In 1687 it was badly and irreparably damaged  during a war between the Venetians and the Ottoman Turks, who ruled Athens at the time. Today there is some restoration occurring, although the original splendor of the temple can never be recaptured. Since its creation, it has always been considered one of the great architectural works of the world, both for its aesthetics and brilliant construction techniques. It is truly one of the glories of ancient Greece.

The temple contained many magnificence statues along the pediments and frieze by the great Greek sculptor, Pheidias. Most of these were preserved throughout the vicissitudes of time, until in early 19th century, when a British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, Lord Elgin, removed and transported them to Britain. They are now housed in the British Museum. Their removal was, and continues to be, a major source of controversy. Was Elgin simply vandalizing and plundering this ancient site? Or was he acting judiciously by transporting them to a place where they would be well preserved? And who really owns them? Greece claims they belong to Greece; the British claim that legally, they are theirs. I doubt they will be leaving the British Museum any time soon.

zz272

This is not however what interests me the most. What I find most interesting is how they became a source of scandal to the women of Britain at the time they were publicly displayed. Apparently the depiction of such unadulterated male nudity was not something the more proper upper classes of British society were prepared for. Although damaged and in a state of various preservation today, as when Elgin took them, these statues still display some of the finest examples of Greek classical art that we have. To the Greeks, nudity was not something to be ashamed of, and the human body was something to be admired in art as an object of beauty; it never ceases to amuse me how uncomfortable we still are with nudity today in our world, even the artistic depiction of nudity. You will still find the debates among the more religiously conservative as to how to dress, how short a skirt should be, etc. And of course in the Islamic world the need to cover up the entire female body seems to be becoming more and more the norm. Puritanism reigns supreme in many places around the world, including our own society. One of the things I enjoy about Greek art is the completely celebration of nude beauty, a thing which is so antithetical to so many religious circles today.

zz274

I find this is always something to be on guard against. The Parthenon, although well preserved, did suffer from ancient forms of censorship once it was converted to a Christian Church. It was not uncommon for the more zealous Christians to destroy those ancient nude statues they felt were violating the norms of modesty (in addition to the fact that there was a great controversy in the early middle ages about whether any images should be allowed in Churches, otherwise known as the Iconoclastic controversy). In some ways Islam, having sprung up around the same time as this controversy was raging in the Christian world, is a by product of this, since the prohibition against graven images is quite strong in Islam. Even in the more fundamentalist circle of Christianity today, images are taboo. Images of men and women, especially nude depictions, has a strange way of stirring up strange antagonisms in certain people.

One of the things I enjoy about Catholicism is the completely unabashed celebration of divine things through imagery. It is one of the aspects of the ancient world that the Church has maintained. The results have been some of the great artworks of the world.

zz273

But back to the Elgin statues: they are not erotic, they are simply nude. Today they would cause little controversy, except perhaps among, again, religious conservatives and puritans. I have read the more fundamentalist types say that any nude depiction is nothing but porn. Most of us may laugh as such an assertion, but it is important to remember that such people, with such views, if they had their way, would destroy a great deal of art work in the name of God and purity. Just ask those who witnessed the destruction of the ancient statues to Buddha in Afghanistan by the Taliban many years ago.

So to this day Greek art, as we see in the Elgin marbles, is a testimony of, and celebration of, beauty through art. Such things are worth defending.

Caravaggio’s “Calling of St. Matthew”

Pope Francis recently stated in an interview that he used to enjoy contemplating this great painting while visiting the Church in Rome where it is found. To quote him:

When I had to come to to Rome, I always stayed in [the neighborhood of the] Via della Scrofa. From there I often visited the Church of St. Louis of France, and I went there to contemplate the painting of “The Calling of St. Matthew” by Caravaggio. That finger of Jesus, pointing at Matthew. That’s me. I feel like him. Like Matthew. . . . This is me, a sinner on whom the Lord has turned his gaze.

This is one of the most famous and profound paintings dealing with religious experience and conversion. It is all about shadow and light and the simple power of Jesus beckoning a future disciple. There are no angels, no visible, grandiose manifestations of the divine; rather, it is simply, as the Gospel states, Jesus calling Mathew to follow him. For the present Pope, who is clearly a man who believes and follows the Gospel message of simplicity and genuine divine love, I can see how this painting would be a source of spiritual nourishment.

I have always found art to be a great vehicle of spiritual expression; just as with the erotic, art has always been used to express those things that are deepest and most important to our spiritual lives, to explore the parts of our souls and our relationship with God that are impossible to capture in words. It is nice to know that the Pope also enjoys such aspects of good art.

Ancient Greek Erotica

zz214

As I have often stated, there is a long and ubiquitous history of erotic art in all cultures. The ancient Greeks were perhaps the first people who truly captured the beauty of eroticism in way that no one else had done. Even today their sexual proclivities and artistic expressions of sex are still controversial. The photos in this post, although you might find them in a museum, and perhaps would be worth quite a bit of money at an auction, might get you in trouble at work or school if the wrong person saw them.

These images are from two vase paintings. I am not sure of their exact date, but I would guess somewhere around the fifth or fourth century BC. What they display so well is the Greek love of simple beauty: the clear lines, the straightforwardness of the sexual acts, the overall lack of adornment and exaggeration in compositions which are still balanced and harmonious and naturalistic, all speak to a culture that enjoyed and understood the basic necessity of sexual pleasure in life. The Greeks loved beauty, and they especially loved the beauty of the human body. What makes these particular objects all the more interesting is that they are items that most likely would have been accessible to a person of at least modest means. Unlike expensive statues, usually made of bronze or marble, a vase painting is not a terribly costly or difficult item to create. What we have remaining today, mostly now in museums, are the ones that have survived and been rediscovered after two thousand years. Perhaps they were once part of a brothel? Or perhaps they belonged to a private collection in a house? It is hard to say. Whatever the case, we can only assume that many others like these once existed, which have now been lost forever to the ravages of time.

zz217

What ancient vase paintings show is how people have always enjoyed erotic depictions, even porn, for thousands of years. Both the creation and consumption of erotica is simply part or our nature, whether we like it or not. And in the hands of a skilled artist, such as these vase painters were, that consumption can be a true enjoyment indeed.

Bridget Bardot: A Classic and Highly Sexual Beauty

Bridget Bardot was one of first golden sex goddesses of the post war era. Born in 1934, this French model and actress was supreme among beauties of the fifties and sixties. Although never considered a great actress, she nevertheless was well known, admired and even worshiped by a large following. What I find interesting about her, aside from her exquisite beauty, was her nearly insatiable sexual appetites. This woman enjoyed sex, having lovers, and flaunting the sexual conventions of her society. Even in our day, there are few women who are so openly comfortable in their own sexuality as she was with hers.

One of the great joys of my life is encountering such women as Bardot, whether as lovers or not; simply being in the company of other highly sexual women, such as those who embrace and are not afraid of their sexuality, is always rewarding. We still live in a world where certain women for the most part are slut shamed, mostly by other females, for being highly and actively sexual. Bardot seemed to have been immune to such things, even though she lived in a time when such proclivities were highly frowned upon by established and proper society. She even had her own harem: of men. She enjoyed rotating lovers, was married several times, and professed later in life that she was never fit to be a mother (although she did have a child from one marriage); parenthood was not something for which she was psychologically suited. There are many women like this in the world, but they often have to live in a closet of social repression for not conforming to the good girl, monogamous ideal that is demanded of most females.

I have always made it a mission of mine to find such women, and help them discover, explore, and unleash their sexual potential. It is delightful pastime. They may not be the majority of women, or even close to it, but there are enough out there to make life quite exciting. As I have said before, I love finding a girl’s inner whore, and helping her find it too. There are simply so many girls out there who know nothing of their own sexual enjoyment or potential, until they come across the right man.

But as far as Bardot, her first big movie success was with the 1956 French film And God Created Woman (Et Dieu créa la femme) in which she plays a sexual adventurous young woman. Today the film would be considered tame, but its open sexual themes were quite scandalous for its time. Throughout the years Bardot also posed nude for several photoshoots. She eventually retired from the entertainment business in the mid seventies, and has since then stayed retired. Her later life has been devoted to promoting animal rights and criticizing the growing influence of Islam on French society. In all these things she has been a staunch defender of traditional French culture and beauty. The idiotic French courts have several times fined her for her stated views on the dangers of the Islamification of France, citing her promotion of  “racial hatred”. I suppose when the French judges are no longer allowed to drink wine in France because the then majority Muslim population has banned it, they might perhaps reconsider their naive punishment of those who are merely trying to defend their culture from those who are often quite hostile to it.

But whatever the situation these days, in her prime Bardot was a beautiful woman who enjoyed a beautiful and liberating sexuality. She is a great testament to the beauty inherent in French culture. God bless her!

The Delights of Late Summer Sights

I love the summer. Yes, I have said it many times before, but it can not be said enough. What I love in particular are all the pretty, half naked girls out and about with their short skirts, dresses and low cut shirts. Already today I have been treated to some wonderful cleavage. Ah yes, there are few things more satisfying to a man on a hot summer day than to enjoy some subtle or not so subtle views of some wonderful, soft breasts.

Of course such visions get me all worked up, so the next time I see my latest lover (this weekend) we are going to have some intense, hot summer sex…

How I love the abundance of beautiful women in the world!

I enjoy the endless pleasures of free love. No two women are the same, each one responds differently to sexual stimuli, and the excitement of seduction is unique to each situation. Although not for everyone (if not most), the enjoyment of a variety of women, the sharing of sexual pleasures with each one, is a delightful gift. I love the freedom to be able to enjoy as many erotic experiences as possible with whomever I chose, and with as many women as I like. It is a blessed life.

A Celebration of Erotic Beauty

I love the essence of eroticism. Photos such as this capture a part of life, the beauty of sexuality, the loveliness of the female form. As a male, of course I have my own particular predilections when it comes to feminine beauty. Not only is there the sheer visual pleasure of such sights, but there is also the evocative possibilities of physical, sexual pleasure shared with such a creature, even though, as in this photo, such pleasure are actually not possible. This is, after all, simply a photo of someone I know nothing about, nor will ever know anything about. Yet it is still enjoyable to view.

There are also the memories that such photos incite: memories of past pleasures shared with various women throughout your life. Even the earliest experiences of erotics pleasures from our youth never quite dim in our memories as time past. And for all men, emblazoned on their memory forever is that precious first experience of a flesh and blood female, naked and inviting and such an object of fascination for the curious and pent up and sexually frustrated youth who can now enjoy what he has spent so many nights only fantasizing about. When that moment comes, we usually want to get down on our knees and thank God.

Women, holding all the keys to sexual access, cannot really understand this most basic aspect of male nature. They perceive it, they know how to work it to their own advantages, but they cannot really understand it. One of the reasons I post such photos on this blog is as a simple celebration of this universal fact of life, the way men desire women, our delight in visual stimulation, and how that will never change. There are many who find such images objectionable, most notably the religiously pure and fanatical, and rabid, harpy feminists. I hope such images make them uncomfortable, because the power of eroticism in all its forms will always be a part of our world, no matter how hard they try to eradicate them in the name of “God” or “equality” or whatever the latest anti-erotic crusading mantra may be.
