inThis is always one of the best nights of the year! Following three days after the winter solstice, this night has for many of us (even those as jaded and degenerate as Racer X) deep meaning, long lasting memories, and the symbolism of eternal joy and hope and happiness.

inThere is a strange and melancholy beauty to the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. On the one hand we experience the day with the least amount of light, and that is always a bit disconcerting, but on the other hand we are about to see the amount of daylight slowly increase now, until we reach the glorious warmth of the summer solstice on June 21.
Twilight is a beautiful thing on this day, for the sadness of such little light, and the hope and reality of the renewal of light beginning the next day.

This is a nice photo of the Via Appia in Rome, (also known as the Appian Way) one of the worlds oldest roads. First begun in the year 312 BC by the Roman consul Appius Claudius, the rode provided a paved route from Rome to important strategic positions to the south. Today parts of the road remain paved, and even used by cars, especially the section right outside of Rome itself. Other sections, like this one, are nice walking tours for those interested in exploring and experiencing the ancient Roman world in a first hand way.
