Botticelli’s Venus

Botticelli captured an eternal beauty...

Botticelli captured an eternal beauty…

I have written about this piece before, but still, good art, like good poetry, can always be enjoyed and appreciated over and over again. I recently saw a close up of Venus’ face, and was even more impressed by how beautiful Botticelli’s depiction of the ancient goddess is. Although painted in 1486, this painting has as much beauty and sensuality and eroticism as anything produced in our modern world, with all our digital photography, instant selfies, and universal online interactions. What I enjoy most is the simplicity of her beauty, how Botticelli has conveyed with seemingly a few simple strokes a perfection of female beauty that reaches a spiritual depth, while still being both sensual and overtly sexual. Her evocative gaze is as alluring as anything you might see today in any film or magazine, online or printed, and is a good reminder for those women who try too hard to be attractive, less is often more.

Good art transcends all ages. Beauty is always eternal. And no one captured it better than Botticelli.

Here is a nice photo for today. I particularly like the play of light, shade, fabric and her natural curves. A good nude should convey something of both the erotic and the beautiful, naturally and without pretense, while maintaining the mystery of sensuality and sexuality. A good nude should have some quality of art. This photo seems to have achieved that.

Tropical Beauty

Racer X is currently enjoying the pleasures and beauties of the tropics at the moment. Every year at this time he makes a pilgrimage to the land of warmth, sea and sunshine to honor those magical and mythical beings of the sea, the sea nymphs, otherwise known as Nereids (the daughters of the sea god Nereus). Supposedly there are fifty daughters of Nereus but I believe there are many more. Here is one I discovered recently. Like all nymphs, the Nereids are quite alluring and beautiful, and this photo shows why. There are few things more pleasurable for a man than enjoying the company and delights of one of these exotic divinities.

Happy May Day!

She wears the floral crown of a May Day celebrant.

The ancient pagan festival of May Day occurs on this day, May 1. Although we really do not celebrate this ancient rite anymore, at least in North America it is still important to not forget the old ways of our ancestors. The festival has its origins in Europe, from the Romans in honor of the goddess Flora, the goddess of flowers, to the Celtic and Germanic tribes with their various local deities. It is a holiday of growth and fertility, the abundance natural beauty in the world, the creation of new livestock and vegetation. Flowers and the beauty of floral arrangements are of particular importance in this old festival. The Catholic Church eventually incorporated this pagan ritual into the devotion to Mary, since May is traditionally a month in which she is honored. One of the great Marian events of the modern world, Fatima, occurred in May.

But as far as the pure pagan roots of this happy time of the year, a time when the days are getting longer and warmer and our world seems to be infused with the gentle light of a an ever precious spring, the special beauty of May Day is still worth celebrating.
