I have written about this piece before, but still, good art, like good poetry, can always be enjoyed and appreciated over and over again. I recently saw a close up of Venus’ face, and was even more impressed by how beautiful Botticelli’s depiction of the ancient goddess is. Although painted in 1486, this painting has as much beauty and sensuality and eroticism as anything produced in our modern world, with all our digital photography, instant selfies, and universal online interactions. What I enjoy most is the simplicity of her beauty, how Botticelli has conveyed with seemingly a few simple strokes a perfection of female beauty that reaches a spiritual depth, while still being both sensual and overtly sexual. Her evocative gaze is as alluring as anything you might see today in any film or magazine, online or printed, and is a good reminder for those women who try too hard to be attractive, less is often more.
Good art transcends all ages. Beauty is always eternal. And no one captured it better than Botticelli.
